A Bloomington man has spent the last 25 years in prison for a crime he maintains he did not commit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barton McNeil was convicted for the murder of his daughter in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday was a new step in his fight for innocence as Bart\u2019s legal team presented new evidence, they believe will grant him a new trial to clear his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-29.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"874\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/freebart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-29.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freebart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-29.png 874w, https:\/\/freebart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-29-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/freebart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-29-768x428.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 874px) 100vw, 874px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PHOTO CAPTION:  <em>Bart McNeil\u2019s attorneys present evidence in hopes of new trial in \u201898 death of daughter(25 News)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barton has long maintained it was his ex-girlfriend Misook Nowlin that killed 3-year-old Christina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it wasn\u2019t until 2011 that Bart\u2019s case got a lot of attention, after Misook brutally murdered her mother-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">25 News has been following this case since 1998, when his Bart\u2019s daughter was found dead in his Bloomington apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christina\u2019s death was initially ruled as natural causes, but Bart called Bloomington police back to the apartment four different times, adamant that his ex-girlfriend Misook Nowlin broke into his house to kill her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ultimately led to his own arrest and a 100-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t until 2011 that Bart\u2019s case got the attention from the Illinois Innocence Project and Exoneration project, this was after Misook killed her mother-in-law in a gruesome murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday\u2019s hearing was an evidentiary hearing, and for the first time Misook\u2019s daughter took the stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michelle Spencer described Bart as a father figure when she was 8 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was nice to me, he talked to me, we use to play computer games together,\u201d said Michelle Spencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason she was called to testify on Tuesday was because of a possible admission of guilt from Misook to her then-husband, Don Wang in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was just&#8230; out of the blue, you know what your mom told me one time? And I just sat there and stared at him and said what, what is that? and he said, that she killed Christina,\u201d said Michelle Spencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This conversation allegedly happened at the celebration of life for Don Wang\u2019s mother Linda Tyda, killed by Misook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michelle\u2019s stepmother, Dawn Nowlin, was also there for that conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorney: \u201cWhat did Don Wang say to you at that time?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dawn Nowlin: \u201cHe said that he and Misook was in a big fight and she confessed to killing Christina\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state argues that conversation is just hearsay, and that in a police interview with Don Wang, he didn\u2019t make that claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigator (2012 interview): \u201cDid [Misook] ever at any time confess to you or tell you that she killed Christina?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don Wang: \u201cNot that I can remember\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bart\u2019s team tried to subpoena Don Wang but he is nowhere to be found following the murder of his mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Misook &#8212; she pleaded the fifth today more than nine times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the judge will decide if Bart should get a new trial.
